We use standard building practices and do not deviate from the typical sub-trades that are used in home construction. We are different from standard stick-frame construction in two distinct ways:
The assembly of the entire frame of the dome structure on a prepared foundation is very fast. A typical structure can be assembled on site and ready for siding and shingle application in less than a week.
By creating living environments made of prefabricated curved wood panels that can either be used to form a complete structure, commonly known as a dome, or added as a feature design element to a traditional stick-frame structure, i.e. a “bay-wall” (see Product Lines for description).
The modular structural building method used in the construction of products was proven to withstand extreme seismic and load forces through testing. This testing was completed at the University of British Columbia’s Earthquake Research Facility.
Due to the fact that the wood panels are prefabricated in a controlled environment, there is a high degree of quality, repeatability and consistency. The panels allow for fast and efficient on-site set-up and assembly that requires minimal labour, thereby significantly reducing and minimizing exposure to the outside elements.
A curved or domed structure naturally lends itself to the use of various “green” technologies. For example, its curved surface provides an excellent platform for the capture of solar energy. When built on a slab foundation fitted with radiant heat, the innate convection activity within a domed environment maximizes the flow of the warm or cool air.
In order to be efficient in manufacturing, the panels used in the structures are created with reliable wood shaping methods that are simple and produce very consistent parts. The core of Curved By Design’s competitive advantage over traditional building practices is the specific use of wood in the panels for the modular sectional building method. This allows for the tremendous flexibility in design across a wide range of building applications including cottages, guest houses, spiritual centers, recreational properties, tourist lodges, bed & breakfasts, and dome complexes.
Technological Developments
Recent developments in the “green” building industry have centered on the importance of energy efficiency and environmentally friendly materials and practices that reduces the carbon footprint. Technological developments in the North American building industry have been primarily focused on traditional stick-frame construction, ignoring natural-shaped structures.
Our unique construction method and design offers the market ecologically value-added construction. This results in structures that are exceptionally durable and appropriate for high-risk earthquake and hurricane prone areas.
Research and Development
We will enhance existing building and manufacturing methods by continually exploring new and innovative discoveries that inherently promote the development of curved living spaces and their natural holistic environments. We will also be continually looking for ways to improve our own unique manufacturing methods.
We are working diligently to have its innovative structures included in the Canadian Building Code.
Our ongoing R&D projects will focus on alternative building materials, with a goal to reduce costs and the company’s carbon footprint.
We support a collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach to all research and development projects that are based on a clearly defined market need. This includes, but is not limited to, architects, engineers, contractors and end-users. Working to enhance our design and manufacturing methods by incorporating ideas and expertise from other professionals provides many benefits. We will also contribute to the collective interest in the advancement of technology for the betterment of human societies and the Earth’s environment.
Corporate, social and environmental responsibility is inherent within all the policies and practices of Curved By Design Inc. and will guide all our research and development projects.
