What are the domes made of? |
Curved By Design Inc. uses natural and renewable wood materials in the manufacture of its curved wooden panels, most notably short mill trim ends that are considered industry “wood waste”. Since construction lumber is produced in different lengths with increments of 2 feet, trim ends of 2 ft or less are a by-product when lumber is cut to standard lengths. These short pieces cannot be used in regular wood construction and are typically burned or chipped for panel products. The solid wood trim ends (typically spruce, fir and pine) are an essential component in the formation of the curved panels and are connected with curved oriented strandboard (OSB) strips. OSB is a sheathing product made from wafers of low grade wood (typically aspen or poplar) or other waste wood.
The curved panels are the “building blocks” that form the dome shell grid, which is then covered with OSB sheathing or plywood. Because the dome structure is very similar to North American wood frame construction, the commonly used techniques for insulation, damp proofing, external and internal wall finishes can comfortably be adapted to complete the building project.
