Curved by Design uses standard building practices and does not deviate from the typical sub-trades that are used in wood frame building construction. Curved buildings are different from standard stick-frame construction in two distinct ways:
The modular structural building method used in the construction of our products has been proven to withstand extreme seismic and load forces through testing. This testing was completed at the University of British Columbia's Earthquake Research Facility under the direction and expertise of company co-founder, Dr. Helmut Prion, P.Eng.
Due to the fact that the wood panels are prefabricated in a controlled environment, there is a high degree of quality and consistency. The panels allow for fast and efficient on-site assembly that requires minimal labour, thereby significantly reducing and minimizing exposure to the outside elements.
A curved or domed structure naturally lends itself to the use of various "green" technologies. For example, its curved surface provides an excellent platform for the capture of solar energy. When built on a slab foundation fitted with radiant heat, the innate convection activity within a domed environment maximizes the flow of warm or cool air.
Manufacturing efficiency provides consistently dimensioned wood parts. The structure concept provides free span spaces to serve the varied needs of cottages, guest houses, industrial buildings, and other applications. Domes can also be conjoined, allowing a high range of design options.
Technological Developments
Recent developments in the "green" building industry have centered on the importance of energy efficiency and environmentally friendly materials, and practices that reduce the carbon footprint. Technological developments in the North American building industry have been primarily focused on traditional stick-frame construction, ignoring natural-shaped structures.
Curved by Design's unique construction method and design offers the market ecologically value-added construction. This results in structures that are exceptionally durable and appropriate for high-risk earthquake and hurricane prone areas.
Research and Development
Curved by Design will enhance existing building and manufacturing methods by continually exploring new and innovative discoveries that inherently promote the development of curved living spaces and their natural holistic environments, whilst continually looking for ways to improve unique manufacturing methods.
Curved by Design works diligently to have its innovative structures included in the Canadian Building Code.
Ongoing R&D projects will focus on alternative building materials, with a goal to reduce costs and the company's carbon footprint.
Curved by Design supports a collaborative and multi-disciplinary approach to all research and development projects that are based on a clearly defined market need. This includes, but is not limited to, architects, engineers, contractors and end-users. Working to enhance our design and manufacturing methods by incorporating ideas and expertise from other professionals provides many benefits.Curved by Design also contributes to the collective interest in the advancement of technology for the betterment of human societies and the Earth's environment.
Corporate, social and environmental responsibility is inherent within all the policies and practices of Curved By Design Inc. and guides all our research and development projects.
